JARA Pink Patterned Lampshade

Pink Lampshade

My inspiration for this lamp shade hack came from the Esty shop, Patturn. I like how she uses old maps and pattern paper to cover lampshades. As I had a lampshade to cover, I decided it would fit right into my room.

Pink Lampshade

To incorporate pink, I first painted the lampshade a lovely light pink. I used the very inexpensive brand Apple Barrel acrylic paint called Cameo Pink. I thought that since the pattern paper is thin, the pink would bleed through. I also hoped it would give a faint pink glow.

Pink Lampshade

After allowing the paint to dry for a bit, I pulled out an old pattern I found at a rummage sale and my bottle of Mod Podge. I painted a layer of Mod Podge on the shade, then spread the pattern paper over the glue. Since the paper is fairly thin, it rips easily, so I didn’t smooth the paper out smoothly. I used larger pieces to cover the entire shade. I then added a couple smaller pieces to provide a distinct pattern piece look.

Pink Lampshade

As I said, I had hoped the pink paint would show through the paper, but apparently patterns from the 70′s used thicker paper than now because it didn’t show through much at all. If I hold the shade in direct sunlight, I can see the pink, but that defeats the purpose of having a lamp. In order to add a little more pink, I grabbed a roll of Washi tape and added a “ribbon” detail to the top and bottom of the shade.

To finish up, I re-glued the pattern paper around the edges and trimmed the paper close to the seams. Finally, I used my Mod Podge to seal the outside of the lampshade.

Pink Lampshade

To try this project on your own, you will need the following supplies:

  • white fabric lampshade (mine is the JARA from IKEA )
  • small bottle of acrylic paint – in your favourite colour
  • Mod Podge
  • foam brushes (I used a 1 inch brush
  • unwanted pattern pieces

DIY kitty lamp with FADO

DIY FADO Kitty lamp | IKEA Hackers

To make the Kitty lamp (and surely with NO HELLO first) you have to use:

1. FADO lamp from IKEA
2. 2 small packages of FIMO soft clay (polymer clay)
3. Soft pink paint
4. Black Posca pen (or another pen for glass painting)
5. White glitter for the cheeks, if you like…
6. Just a tiny bit of strong glue

It’s not that hard to make the lamp, but a tip: if you paint something horrible and want to change it, just spray some glass cleaner on a cloth, and carefully remove the Posca pen. Then, try again! I did mine over around 11 (!) times.

See the guide with photos on my blog.

Gallows lamp

Materials: EKBY bracket

Do you remember loving a new toy as a kid so much that you had to take it to bed with you? That might be acceptable as a kid but as an adult toys are no longer enough for me. I hoard lots of stuff in and next to my bed, so I built a hanging lamp to get rid of my bedside lamp and used an EKBY bracket.

How to make a Dump Truck Light for under $10.00

How to make a dump truck light for under $10

For one of my design classes, our assignment was to design a light for under $10. At first, I thought, how am I ever going to do this for under $10.00? So I put my creative thinking cap on, searched images on Google (this was before Pinterest) brainstormed with my hubby, and came up with this….

Our youngest son who was 4 at the time loved everything trucks. What 4 year old boy doesn’t love trucks. So I (we) made him this dump truck light for less than $10.00 We already had this Tonka truck as a hand-me-down, also hand-me-down DUPLO, and the only thing I needed to buy was the light from Ikea for $6.00

All you need to do is to find the right spot to drill a hole in the truck. And thread the light through.

Giving Duderö personality with papier mâché

Duderö lamp pimped with papier mâché

I found an old Duderö lamp at my mothers house which was destined for the trash. I always admired the shape even if the execution kind of matches what you would expect at that price. This particular example was functional but had several large tears.

I had used papier mâché before and choose it since the materials are very affordable so it could be a fun low-risk experiment for me and my girlfriend and we where very happy with the results.

Materials

  • Silk paper (50x70cm x 5)
  • Bleached Wheat flour
  • Caster sugar
  • Wide good quality brush that does not shed

All in all we spent less than 10 euro on the materials.

Ready to go

We used white, green and light blue paper. You can choose any color you want but lighter colors will give a cooler effect. We used a crepé type paper for the white simply because it was cheeper but found during the process that smooth paper is easier to work with and gave better results.

Transparent Wheat Paste recipe

Mix 1 liter of cold water with 1.5 dl of flour and 0.5 dl sugar in a large saucepan. Mix well until all the lumps are gone.

Then slowly bring to a boil while constantly stirring – its very easy to burn which will ruin the paste. Let it boil for a minute and then let it cool briefly. This is what makes the paste transparent.

The exact composition might take some experimenting. Too thin is better than too thick and remember that the mixture thickens considerably when you heat it. You can freshen up old congealed paste by mixing in more water and boiling it again.

Execution

We started by tearing the paper into long strips. Its much easier to do this beforehand than to trying to tear with sticky fingers. Save some larger pieces if you have holes to mend.

Papier mâché is extremely simple; just brush on some paste on then stick the paper on. You will get the best results if you apply the paper carefully and then apply more paste on top so that the paper is wet through. Try to avoid globs of paste.

Remember to unplug the lamp if you are doing this with children since water and electricity don’t mix well.

The first layer is tricky and requires a delicate hand as the thin paper shade of the lamp gets very delicate when wet. We used white paper for this. We patched the holes by applying paste and then a large piece of paper.

Let the first layer dry so that it hardens. This gives you a nice solid surface to work on.

We then built up a layer on layer effect by applying the various colours of strips horizontally. Turn the light on to preview the effect.

Finishing (optional)

We applied a thin glaze made of Gesso (Windsor Newton) which was thinned with water to about the consistency of skim milk which gave it nice chalky feel and softened the light somewhat.

Another alternative could be to apply a clear finish such as water based polyurethane.

LYSBOJ Lamp to Decorate & Dehumidify Store Room

Store rooms or bomb shelters in Singapore have very strict regulations governing its renovation and the ventilation outlet pose as an eye sore to many home owners and some spend lots of money hiding it.

I found this simple IKEA LYSBOJ Lamp shade bought for less than $10 (S$3.90) a great solution… when the lamp is switched on it has the added benefit of dehumidifying the cloistered small room.

The original lampshade is stapled together, not using the provided plastic framework and the light bulb is set up from the inside of the bombshelter and the wire has to be extended to reach the powerpoint in the shelter.

Should more details be required, do let me know. Happy redecorating your bomb shelter.

KRUSNING in Watercolor

This lampshade signifies the completion of the lighting for my creating room.

I’ve had this IKEA 17-inch KRUSNING floating around my room for nearly a year just waiting for me to decorate it. I knew I wanted to paint it with watercolors. I just hadn’t taken the time to buy paints.

krusning paper shade

Before painting, disassemble the lampshade. The plastic ring in the middle snaps apart. You may need a tiny flat-head screwdriver to help pop open the clips. This way, you don’t need to worry about getting paint on the wrong paper.

I received an artist kit at Christmastime and it contained a selection of watercolor pans. I realise they probably aren’t the best quality, but they suited my purpose. In the event I start properly painting with watercolors, I’ll invest in paint and brushes.

I did a little research and talked with my school’s art teacher about how to go about creating a wash over the entire paper. I tried a couple methods. For my first attempt, I first painted the paper with just water, then brushed on the paint. I think because of the way I mixed the paint and water, it ended up being way too thin. I gave the paper a few minutes to dry before finishing the red wash.

Krusning 5

For the following papers, I watered my paint and started painting. I think by the time I got to the third or fourth paper, I was finally mixing just right. This is a medium that requires patience and testing.

Once the papers are dry, you can finish the project. My papers were dry in about 30 minutes, though I gave them about an hour to dry. Stack the papers in the order you want them. I put mine in rainbow order (Roy G Biv – minus the indigo). I stacked them paint side up since it would be hanging from the ceiling. If I do another lampshade, I’ll probably paint both sides of the bottom to papers since both sides show.

krusning 2

krusning 3

Snap the plastic center back in. I don’t think it matters which way it goes.  Attach the clear plastic guard and hang the shade.

I also shared this project on my blog 64 Color Box

The Grid Lamp for the HEMMA cord base

I am a young French architect, and design enthusiast. I made a small lamp for my (also small) flat in Paris based on the IKEA HEMMA lamp base.

I named it : The Grid Lamp

As a personal project, I designed and assembled a small light, based on a the cheap HEMMA lamp base.

I tried to keep the use of material to a minimum. The lamp is made out of three 50x50x0,3cm MDF sheets, laser-cut, stacked and glued together. Its dimension is of 48cm height and 24cm width. The inner faces are coated with golden reflective paper. The whole structure is then simply placed on the base.

IKEA RISMON Lamp Map Hack

Materials:
Ikea Rismon Lamp
Mod podge
Map wrapping paper

Sometimes a little decorative touch can totally transform something mundane into something rather more remarkable, it can add the wow factor. Well that’s exactly what I did with my IKEA lamp hack. I was subtle with my map pimping and decoupaged the inside of my IKEA lampshade and not outside. Therefore you get a hint of map, so when you look up at these ceiling lamps instead of a boring white inside you now see a cool map.

The great thing about the IKEA Rismon lampshade like a lot of things from IKEA it comes in kit form which makes it very easy to decoupage.

1. Take the lampshade cover out of the box and unravel. Measure the length and width of the cover

Remove the lampshade

Cut map to sizd

2. Cut map wrapping paper to the size of the lampshade cover. One sheet of paper should be enough. You will have to fit the map in 2 pieces.

3. Paste the inside of the lampshade with glue/ Mod Podge. Stick your map to the shade. Using a ruler to carefully squeeze out any air bubbles.

Decoupage the map

4. You can leave the decoupaged map as it is or seal it with a layer of Mod Podge to provide extra protection.

5. Now put your lamp together following your IKEA instructions.

IKEA Lamp Map Hack

As you can see this is a very easy but effective IKEA hack. The addition of maps is a great improvement on the original. I love this map lampshade so much that I ended up making 2 and will probably make some more as I have a lot of ceiling lamps in my house.

See complete tutorial here.

DIY West-Elm inspired industrial task floor lamp IKEA AROD hack

IKEA product: AROD floor lamp

I’ve had a trusty AROD IKEA floor lamp for quite a few years, and while it does its job, the plain grey finish just didn’t fit the modern-rustic style of my latest living room refresh. What I really longed for was the West Elm Industrial Task Floor lamp – it has such a modern yet timeless appeal. Alas, I couldn’t justify spending money on a new lamp when my IKEA one worked perfectly well. So instead of buying new and contributing to wasteful consumerism, I used what I already had and turned it into a West-Elm lookalike with spray paint and sisal rope.

This project was really simple and inexpensive – I needed only a can of matte black spray paint, a roll of small-size sisal rope and a glue gun. Total cost was just under $15 and it took me under an hour to complete (not counting the hour watching Suits while the paint dried).

diy-ikea-lamp-hack diy-lamp-hack-ikea ikea-diy-lamp-makeover-with-rope

First, I spray painted the whole lamp a matte black using Rustoleum paint, making sure to tape off inside the light head itself. Once the paint was dry, I used sisal rope from the dollar store and tightly wrapped it around the neck of the lamp from top-middle, made a cut, and then again from middle-bottom. I used a hot glue gun to secure the rope with glue just at the ends to secure it.

painting-an-ikea-floor-lamp West-Elm Inspired Industrial task floor lamp IKEA hack West-Elm Inspired Industrial task floor lamp IKEA hack

It looks fantastic in my living room and much cheaper than spending money on a new one from West Elm. The lesson here: before ordering something new that catches your eye, take a look around at what you already have – especially functional IKEA items – and hack it to give you the look you’re after. It’s easier than you think!
